Marriott may bring Moxy, other global brands to India

  • Hotel chain Marriott International Inc., has started a major integration program after its acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, making it the largest hotel chain in the world with over 5,800 properties under 30 hotel brands in more than 110 countries.
  • Marriott is looking at bringing more global brands from the combined entity to India to raise its market share in the domestic hospitality sector.
  • The company is currently studying the market to bring its millennials- focused global lifestyle brand Moxy Hotels to India, & looking to introduce other brands as well.
  • Moxy Hotels is a lifestyle hotel brand created by Marriott targeting younger customers, launched in 2014.
  • Existing Marriott brands in India are very well-positioned, driving considerable premium & Marriott is considering to bring its new brand Moxy in the moderately priced space in the lifestyle segment.
  • Operators want to have brands for every possible market as markets are expanding in tier II & III cities. However in Tier III cities, putting bigger brands is not feasible & therefore, operators are planning some of their more affordable brands here.
  • Marriott which currently operates 84 hotels under 15 brands including Ritz Carlton, JW Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott across 19 cities in India, overtook the Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces to become India’s largest hotel company.
