Reebok to launch shoes made of ‘corn’ this year

  • Reebok will bring plant-based footwear to the global market later this year under its Cotton + Corn sustainable product initiative, an initiative developed by the Reebok Future team to create shoes “made from things that grow.”
  • The first release will be a shoe comprising of organic cotton & a base originating from industrially grown corn.
  • Reebok has partnered with DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products , for developing Susterra propanediol, a pure, petroleum-free, non-toxic, 100% certified bio-based product, derived from field corn to create the sole of the Cotton + Corn shoes.
  • The company’s goal is to create bio-based footwears that can be composted after use &using that compost as part of the soil for growing the materials for the next range of shoes.
  • Currently, many shoes are made with oil-based plastics that are harmful to the environment as the process for making one pair of running sneakers emits around 30 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
